Monster Hunter Wilds: Weapon Tuning and Design Philosophy

With each new Monster Hunter installment, players eagerly anticipate how their favorite weapons will feel. This article delves into the design philosophy behind the weapon tuning in Monster Hunter Wilds, a game aiming for a seamless hunting experience. We spoke with Kaname Fujioka (Art Director and Executive Director, also director of the first Monster Hunter game) and Yuya Tokuda (Wilds Director, involved since Monster Hunter Freedom) to uncover the details.

Seamless Hunting and Weapon Adjustments

The seamless world and dynamic weather of Wilds necessitated significant weapon adjustments. Tokuda highlighted substantial changes to the Light and Heavy Bowguns and the Bow, addressing the challenge of consumable ammo and coatings in a world without mandatory base returns for restocking. The solution involved allowing unlimited use of basic ammo types while managing a gauge, while still permitting the use of crafted or field-gathered ammo for enhanced effects.

Visual Enhancements and Natural Gameplay

Fujioka emphasized the visual improvements, particularly in showcasing the charging animations of Bowguns. Technological advancements allowed for more detailed animations, impacting not only the visual experience but also the gameplay flow. The goal was to ensure natural weapon usage, even during actions like healing, which previously required sheathing the weapon. The new Focus Mode, allowing directional movement during attacks, further enhances this natural feel.

Focus Strikes and Wound System

Wilds introduces Focus Strikes, powerful attacks executed in Focus Mode after wounding a monster. While visually distinct for each weapon, Tokuda clarified that the damage output is standardized across weapons post-beta testing, aiming for balance while retaining weapon individuality. The wound system itself adds strategic depth, allowing hunters to target specific body parts and exploit vulnerabilities, with environmental interactions creating unexpected scar locations and potential rewards. Monster health and toughness were adjusted to maintain appropriate playtime and player satisfaction, with Focus Mode aiming to create more concentrated, impactful hunting experiences.

Weapon Development Process

The development team, comprising around six planners responsible for player experience, utilizes a process where the Great Sword serves as a prototype. Its development informs the design of other weapons. Fujioka and Tokuda emphasized the collaboration between designers and artists, focusing on both functionality and visual appeal. Focus Strikes, a novel concept, were initially designed for feel and enjoyment, with the Great Sword serving as the initial testbed due to its central role in the series' history and its status as an all-rounder weapon. The Great Sword's deliberate tempo influences the design of faster weapons, maintaining a balance that defines the Monster Hunter experience.

Weapon Uniqueness and Balance

The developers prioritize weapon individuality over strict balance. While acknowledging the inevitable popularity of certain weapons, they aim to ensure that every weapon offers a satisfying and rewarding hunting experience through thoughtful design and tuning. The Hunting Horn, for example, was designed to excel in area control and sound-based attacks rather than sheer damage output. The ability to carry two weapons further encourages strategic weapon combinations.

Decoration System and Skill Builds

The decoration system in Wilds is similar to Monster Hunter World, but with the addition of alchemy for creating single-skill decorations, addressing the frustration of unattainable skills.

Developer Preferences and Beta Feedback

Tokuda prefers long-range weapons and the adaptable Sword and Shield, while Fujioka is a dedicated Lance user. The Lance, however, received considerable feedback during the beta test regarding its usability and effectiveness. The developers are actively addressing these issues to ensure a more satisfying experience in the final release.

The developers' commitment to player feedback, coupled with their deep understanding of the Monster Hunter series, ensures that Wilds delivers a compelling and engaging hunting experience. Their dedication to refining weapon balance and preserving the unique character of each weapon type is a testament to their commitment to the series' legacy.
