Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. They've detailed the faction's design inspiration, the evolution of the concept from "Inferno" to "Swarm," and the overarching narrative within the Jadame continent.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by enemy unit levels; the greater the disparity, the more potent the damage inflicted. Others, such as mantises, strategically select one of three abilities per round. Creatures like worms and locusts exhibit a unique regenerative capacity, consuming corpses to heal and enhance their power – a skill also learnable by player heroes.
In Olden Era, the insectoid Swarm assumes the role of the demonic force, a race only briefly alluded to in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, the developers have incorporated elements of body horror and occultism, transforming the faction into more than just an insect colony; it's a cult devoted to a singular overlord. Each member functions as part of a vast hive mind, wholly dedicated to its master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players for utilizing exclusively Swarm units, as they synergistically enhance one another. Swarm units can summon cocoons, their health directly proportional to the army's overall size. Upon hatching, these larvae provide temporary reinforcements, enabling dynamic battlefield adaptation.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is emphasized by its corpse-consuming healing and empowerment abilities, and unique enemy-dependent attacks. This dynamic approach encourages direct confrontation and presents players with a novel combat strategy.
