Palworld's Unexpected Path: From Massive Success to Indie Focus

Pocketpair, the developer behind the wildly successful creature-catching game Palworld, has amassed tens of billions of yen in profits. This windfall could easily fund a "beyond AAA" title, but CEO Takuro Mizobe has a different vision. He's prioritizing the indie development model.

Mizobe, in a recent GameSpark interview, confirmed Palworld's impressive sales figures (tens of billions of yen, or tens of millions of USD). However, he believes scaling up to a AAA-level project would be premature for Pocketpair's current structure. The studio's previous successes, Craftopia and Overdungeon, fueled Palworld's development, but Mizobe isn't repeating the pattern.

"Developing our next game with these proceeds would create a project beyond AAA scale, but our organizational maturity isn't ready," Mizobe explained. He prefers to focus on "interesting indie games," leveraging improved game engines and industry conditions to achieve global reach without a massive team. He credits the indie community for Pocketpair's growth and wants to give back.

Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair won't be expanding its team or upgrading offices. Instead, the focus is on expanding the Palworld IP into other mediums. Palworld's early access phase has already seen significant updates, including a PvP arena and the Sakurajima island. A new partnership with Sony's Palworld Entertainment will handle global licensing and merchandising. The future of Pocketpair looks bright, but it will likely remain firmly rooted in the indie space.
