In a revealing interview with Bloomberg, Carrie Patel, the second game director of Avowed, provided insights into the tumultuous development journey that saw two years of work discarded. Initially, Obsidian Entertainment set out to create Avowed as a blend of Destiny and Skyrim, with ambitions of a vast open world designed for cooperative exploration and multiplayer engagement.
The excitement surrounding the project peaked with the release of the first teaser trailer in 2020. However, this excitement belied the truth: the game was far from finished. Mere months after the trailer's release, the decision was made to abandon the entire project and start over from scratch. As a result, the teaser trailer now serves as a poignant reminder of an unreleased prototype that bore little resemblance to the game that would eventually be released.
After the project's reboot, Carrie Patel took the helm as game director and steered Avowed in a new direction. She moved away from the initial inspirations of Skyrim and Destiny, opting to forgo the open-world and multiplayer elements. Instead, Obsidian returned to their strengths, adopting a zone-based structure and concentrating on a rich, single-player narrative deeply connected to the Pillars of Eternity universe.
Restarting the development mid-process posed significant challenges, comparable to making a film without a script. Teams worked tirelessly amidst uncertainty, as the leadership struggled to forge a unified vision. Despite these obstacles, it took another four years of dedicated effort before Avowed was finally ready for release.
