Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan-set installment, is set to launch February 14th, bringing significant changes to the franchise's iconic parkour mechanics and introducing a dual protagonist system.
The game features two playable characters with distinct styles: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at navigating rooftops and shadows; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but lacking climbing abilities. This design aims to appeal to both fans of classic stealth gameplay and those who prefer the RPG-style combat introduced in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.
Ubisoft has significantly overhauled the parkour system. Instead of freeform climbing on any surface, players will now navigate designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable areas remain accessible, requiring a more strategic approach. This change, according to Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, allows for more controlled level design and enhances the contrast between Naoe and Yasuke's movement capabilities.
Further enhancing the parkour experience are seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives during descents. A new prone position also enables sprinting dives and slides, adding fluidity to movement. The grappling hook remains a valuable tool for accessing otherwise unreachable areas.
Assassin's Creed Shadows will launch on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th. Its release coincides with other highly anticipated titles, setting the stage for a competitive February gaming landscape. The coming weeks promise further details from Ubisoft as the release date approaches.
