FromSoftware Will Continue To Create Single-Player Focused Games
The Duskbloods Director on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice Blog

FromSoftware, the creators behind the critically acclaimed Elden Ring, have reassured fans that they will continue crafting their signature single-player experiences. Despite their foray into multiplayer with titles like The Duskbloods and Elden Ring Nightreign, the studio remains committed to their roots. The Duskbloods, announced during the April 2 Nintendo Direct, is an exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch 2. It embraces online multiplayer PvPvE while maintaining the Soulslike themes and aesthetics fans love.
In a recent entry on Nintendo's insider blog, Creator’s Voice, posted on April 4, FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki addressed the studio's direction. He emphasized that despite the upcoming multiplayer projects, FromSoftware's dedication to single-player games remains unwavering. Miyazaki stated, "As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward." He further reassured fans by mentioning the announced Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring, highlighting their continued commitment to single-player titles.
The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods

Miyazaki shed light on The Duskbloods' thematic core, revolving around the concept of blood. Players assume the role of "Bloodsworn," individuals endowed with superhuman abilities through the use of special blood. Drawing parallels to vampires, Miyazaki clarified that the depiction would steer away from traditional monstrous portrayals.
Central to the game is the competition for "The First Blood," which emerges during "The Twilight of Humanity," an event marking the end of human society. This event unfolds across various times and places, enriching the game's narrative.

For the game's setting, Miyazaki described a blend of Gothic and Victorian aesthetics alongside maps depicting the closing years of the early modern period, such as the train scene glimpsed in the trailer.
He explained, "Blood symbolizes one of the game’s key themes—the history it holds, the power it passes on, the fates it weaves, and the marker of those who have surpassed the limitations of their own humanity." This conceptual use of blood adds depth to the game's narrative and mechanics.
Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer

The Duskbloods' trailer showcased a diverse array of characters, each with unique designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed over a dozen characters available for selection, with some level of customization. He expressed, "I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them."
Players start their journey at a "hub" where they can choose and customize their character before diving into online multiplayer sessions supporting up to 8 players. Post-match, players return to the hub to claim their rewards, primarily character customization options.

Matches typically conclude with a last-player-standing format, though special victory conditions may vary. Players might need to defeat a formidable boss or navigate other unique challenges.
Miyazaki elaborated, "Regardless of whether it’s PvP or PvE, the idea is to provide players with an experience that allows them to learn and hone their skills as they play. We’ve therefore designed the PvE boss encounters to present a tough challenge and a sense of accomplishment upon defeating them."

The game introduces "roles" with specific responsibilities and objectives. Miyazaki mentioned roles like "Destined Rivals," where players seek out and defeat their designated rival, and "Destined Companion," where forming a bond with a chosen partner unlocks special rewards. He added, "Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements."
