This week, *Diablo 4* unveiled its first content roadmap, providing a glimpse into what players can expect in 2025, and hinting at even more exciting developments in 2026. IGN had the opportunity to sit down with game director Brent Gibson to delve into the roadmap, covering everything from the much-anticipated second expansion to potential collaborations with other IPs. However, the release of the roadmap has sparked a wave of concern among the *Diablo 4* community regarding the quantity and quality of content planned for 2025.
"Oh boy! Can't wait for new Helltide color and temporary powers," remarked redditor Inangelion. "It's gonna be so dope!"
This sentiment resonates with many dedicated *Diablo 4* players who were hoping for more substantial updates to keep them engaged. "A new season in other ARPGs introduces features like housing systems or innovative trading mechanics that can revolutionize gameplay," said feldoneq2wire. "In contrast, a *D4* season often revolves around minor changes like the color of Helltides and temporary powers or cosmetic skins."
"I'm not a *Diablo 4* hater, I love the game, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of substantial content here, which is disappointing," expressed Fragrantbutte. "The phrase 'and more' is carrying a lot of expectation," added artyfowl444.
The debate grew so intense on the *Diablo 4* subreddit that community manager Lyricana_Nightrayne felt compelled to respond directly to the community's concerns. "We've kept some details vague in the later parts of the roadmap to account for ongoing developments," they explained. "Rest assured, there's more to come in 2025 than what's currently outlined."
A significant point of contention is Blizzard's approach to seasonal content in *Diablo 4*. While some players appreciate the fresh start each season brings, others feel that the lack of continuity makes deep engagement less rewarding. The community is divided; some argue that constant seasonal content would be overwhelming, while others are considering a break until more substantial updates arrive in 2026.
Mike Ybarra, former president of Blizzard Entertainment, now with Microsoft, chimed in on the discussion via X/Twitter. "Don't ship content just to meet a deadline," he advised. "Seasons should break from the cycle of launching, fixing issues for two months, and then repeating. The team needs time to address end-game issues thoroughly. Playing for a week to then repeatedly tackle an 'uber' boss for a unique item isn't engaging."
Ybarra further suggested, "Expansions should be released annually. Reducing the focus on story elements, which are costly and one-time, could allow for more frequent updates with new classes, enemy types, and enduring end-game activities."

The community's frustration with the expansion schedule is linked to the delay of the second expansion, initially planned for 2025 but now set for 2026. Blizzard's original plan was to release an expansion annually, but after Vessel of Hatred launched in 2024, the next expansion will miss the 2025 target.
In our interview, Gibson reflected on the challenges of managing *Diablo 4* as a live service game with both free seasonal content and major paid expansions. "Gamers are hungrier than ever, and their expectations evolve rapidly," Gibson noted. "We need to be agile, adapting to new trends and feedback. The priorities can shift quickly due to other game releases or changes within our own game. We might uncover a fantastic new feature that we want to introduce to shake things up."
"Developing *Diablo 4* involves high interaction with our community," Gibson continued. "We cater to various player types, from casual to hardcore, each with their own preferences. Our approach is to focus on different aspects that matter to these groups with each season. For instance, Season 8 will introduce quality-of-life improvements for boss lair enthusiasts, while Season 9 might emphasize nightmare dungeons, allowing us to address the needs of different player segments before a major expansion that appeals to everyone."
*Diablo 4* Season 8 is set to launch later in April, with Season 9 expected in the summer, and Season 10 slated for later in the year.
