Nintendo and GameStop have responded to the issue that arose on the launch day of the Nintendo Switch 2, where several consoles were sold with damaged screens. The damage reportedly occurred when store employees used staples to attach receipts directly to the Switch 2 packaging.
Affected customers who spoke with IGN confirmed that GameStop has begun offering replacement Nintendo Switch 2 units, sourcing them from nearby locations to ensure prompt resolution for impacted buyers.
GameStop also released a brief statement addressing the situation. When contacted by IGN, Nintendo directed inquiries to this official response from the retailer. The statement clarifies that the screen damage caused by stapling was limited to a single location.
"We've addressed a unique case of staples damaging Switch 2 screens — isolated to one store," GameStop said in an official social media post.“Replacements have been offered. Staplers have been confiscated,” the company added, accompanied by a short video clip from the 1999 comedy *Office Space*, showing a humorous moment where a boss confiscates an employee’s stapler.

Fans attending the midnight launch at the Forest Avenue branch of GameStop in Staten Island discovered broken screens on their newly purchased Switch 2 consoles after opening the boxes. Many expressed frustration over the practice of stapling receipts to the console boxes, while others criticized the design of Nintendo's packaging, which places the console upright with its screen facing outward against thin cardboard.
“I knew this would happen,” another fan wrote on social media. “It was a weird decision by Nintendo to have the screen sit face-side-up at the very top of the box with only the thin cardboard to protect it. You're going to hear about a few damaged screens in the coming days. They are at risk just being stacked in shipping.”
IGN has reached out to both Nintendo and GameStop to ask whether other retailers have been advised against attaching receipts in this manner and whether future packaging changes could be made to better protect the consoles from accidental damage during handling.

Another customer, whose Switch 2 was also replaced, mentioned they were informed that GameStop acted swiftly to pull available stock from local stores to provide replacements to affected buyers.
