NIS America Accelerates Western Releases of Trails and Ys Series
Good news for fans of Falcom's Trails and Ys RPG series! NIS America, the publisher bringing these acclaimed Japanese titles to the West, has announced a significant commitment to faster localization. This follows the recent release of Ys X: Nordics and the upcoming launch of Trails Through Daybreak II.
In an interview with PC Gamer, NIS America's Senior Associate Producer, Alan Costa, confirmed the company's intensified efforts. While specifics remain confidential, Costa highlighted the reduced timeframe for Trails Through Daybreak II, launching early 2025 despite its September 2022 Japanese release. This represents a substantial improvement on previous release schedules.
Historically, Western fans faced lengthy delays. The Trails in the Sky series, for example, experienced a seven-year gap between its Japanese and Western releases. Even more recent titles like Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure took twelve years to reach a global audience. This was largely attributed to the immense volume of text requiring translation, as detailed in a 2011 blog post by a former XSEED Games Localization Manager.
While a two-to-three-year localization process remains the norm, NIS America emphasizes maintaining quality. Costa stressed the importance of balancing speed with accuracy, a challenge the company has actively addressed. The past delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation errors serves as a cautionary tale, underscoring the need for careful attention to detail.
The faster release of Trails Through Daybreak II signifies a positive shift. The game's positive reception suggests this accelerated approach can deliver both speed and quality. This bodes well for future releases from NIS America, promising a quicker arrival of these beloved RPGs for Western players.
