SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Companies: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation
SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, following protracted negotiations. This action targets companies like Activision, Electronic Arts, and others, primarily due to concerns over the unchecked use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry.

Key Issues: The AI Debate
The core conflict centers on the potential for AI to replace human actors. SAG-AFTRA isn't against AI technology itself, but fears its misuse. Concerns include the unauthorized replication of actors' voices and likenesses, and the displacement of actors, particularly those starting their careers, from smaller roles. Ethical concerns also arise regarding AI-generated content that may not align with an actor's values.

Temporary Solutions and New Agreements
To address the challenges, SAG-AFTRA has implemented new agreements:
-
Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA): This agreement caters to indie and lower-budget games, offering varying rates and terms based on budget (from $250,000 to $30 million). Crucially, it includes AI protections initially rejected by the video game industry bargaining group.
-
Interim Interactive Media Agreement and Interim Interactive Localization Agreement: These provide temporary solutions covering compensation, AI usage, working conditions, and other crucial aspects. Importantly, these agreements exclude post-release content like expansion packs and DLC. Projects under these agreements are exempt from the strike.

A Long Road to Negotiation: Union Solidarity
Negotiations began in October 2022. A strong 98.32% vote in favor of strike authorization in September 2023 demonstrates the union's resolve. While progress was made on several issues, the lack of sufficient AI protections remains the primary obstacle.

SAG-AFTRA leaders emphasize the industry's substantial profits and the vital contributions of their members. The union remains committed to securing fair treatment and AI protections for its members in the evolving video game industry. The strike underscores the ongoing tension between technological advancement and the rights and livelihoods of creative professionals.
