How Boredom Birthed a Masterpiece
The Spark of Something New

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has emerged as an instant classic, earning top honors as 2025's highest-rated title while selling over a million copies in its first weekend. Remarkably, this game-of-the-year frontrunner originated from creative frustration and a desire to break new ground.
In a May 4 interview with BBC News, Sandfall Interactive developers revealed the game's unconventional origin story. Creative Director Guillaume Broche confessed the project began as an antidote to professional stagnation. During 2020's pandemic lockdown while employed at Ubisoft, Broche found himself itching to create something distinctly personal.
Drawing inspiration from childhood memories of Final Fantasy, Broche set out to craft his own JRPG-style adventure. His journey started humbly - with a Reddit post.
The Power of Serendipity

Broche began assembling his team through unconventional means, casting wide nets across Reddit and gaming forums. At the time, his vision for a Belle Époque-inspired turn-based RPG didn't generate much buzz, but undeterred, he continued reaching out to potential collaborators.
Among the responders was Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, then in Australian lockdown. She answered Broche's Reddit call for voice actors out of sheer curiosity. "I'd never done voice acting before, but it sounded intriguing enough to send an audition," Svedberg-Yen recalled. What began as a character role evolved into her becoming Expedition 33's lead writer.

After leaving Ubisoft, Broche fully committed to Expedition 33, founding Sandfall Interactive. With backing from publisher Kepler Interactive, the core team expanded to about thirty members - many discovered through equally unconventional channels like Soundcloud, where they found composer Lorien Testard.
With Kepler's support, Sandfall attracted top-tier talent including Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Jennifer English (Baldur's Gate 3), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings).

Despite the growing team, Broche and Svedberg-Yen wore multiple hats throughout development. Core members frequently stepped outside their official roles - Svedberg-Yen even handled multilingual translations. "We have an incredible team of mostly junior developers who poured their hearts into this project," Broche reflected.
Much like the game itself, Expedition 33's creation story feels magical. Through a combination of creative frustration and happy accidents, Sandfall Interactive has crafted what many are calling a generational RPG.
