Ōkami 2 — Capcom, Hideki Kamiya, and Machine Head Discuss Hotly Anticipated Sequel in Exclusive Interview

Feb 19,2025 Author: Connor

Twenty years after the original Ōkami's release, Amaterasu, the sun goddess and source of all goodness, makes a surprising return in a highly anticipated sequel. Announced at The Game Awards, this project reunites director Hideki Kamiya (newly independent from PlatinumGames and leading his new studio, Clovers) with Capcom (publisher) and Machine Head Works (a studio of Capcom veterans). The team boasts a blend of seasoned Ōkami developers and fresh talent.

While details remain scarce, IGN secured a revealing interview with Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata. The discussion covered the sequel's genesis, the collaboration between the studios, and the developers' individual visions.

Kamiya discussed his departure from PlatinumGames, emphasizing his desire to create uniquely "Hideki Kamiya" games. He explained that Clovers aims to foster a creative environment conducive to this goal. He clarified that his games aren't defined by a specific formula but rather by striving for unique player experiences. The name "Clovers," a nod to his previous studio, Clover Studio, embodies this commitment to creativity (represented by the four "C"s in the logo).

Hirabayashi revealed Capcom's long-held desire for an Ōkami sequel, fueled by the game's enduring popularity and a dedicated fanbase. Kamiya confirmed his own persistent wish to continue Amaterasu's story, a desire finally realized after leaving PlatinumGames. Sakata highlighted Machine Head Works' role as a bridge between Capcom and Clovers, leveraging its experience with both Capcom and Kamiya, and its expertise with the RE Engine.

The choice of the RE Engine was lauded for its ability to realize Kamiya's artistic vision, exceeding the limitations of the PS2's technology. The developers discussed the enduring appeal of Ōkami, attributing it to its blend of captivating story, stunning visuals, and enduring charm across generations. They also addressed the early announcement at The Game Awards, emphasizing their excitement and desire to share the news with fans.

The interview concluded with personal reflections on current inspirations, including Takarazuka stage shows (Kamiya), Gekidan Shiki performances (Sakata), and the Gundam GQuuuuuuX movie (Hirabayashi), and a final message to fans expressing gratitude and promising a sequel that meets expectations.
