Avowed Director Wants To Expand The World They've Built
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels

Avowed has achieved impressive sales figures, delighting both Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the Avowed universe. Although no official plans have been announced, Patel expressed her enthusiasm for continuing the journey. "Now that we've built this wonderful world and developed a strong team dynamic around its content and gameplay, I'd love to see us do more with it," she stated.
Changes in Avowed During Development

The development of Avowed was not without its challenges. Patel described the process as "messy" but ultimately rewarding. Initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's considerations to sell the company, Avowed saw significant changes after Microsoft's acquisition in 2020. Key features, including multiplayer aspects, were dropped, and the project underwent a leadership change in January 2021, leading to a complete reboot.
Under Patel's direction, the focus shifted to enriching the narrative and lore connected to the Pillars of Eternity franchise. The game's world transitioned from an open world to open zones, allowing for more detailed and immersive environments. Patel reflected on the chaotic yet fruitful development journey, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian's Ambition for Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is exploring new avenues. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, Director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled Pillars: Tactics. "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games," Sawyer explained. However, he highlighted the challenges of defining the project's scope, team size, and visual quality.
Despite this, Sawyer remains focused on the potential for Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning it with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur's Gate 3—around $100 million—marking a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
