Kojima Aims to Direct Film After Completing Physint in 5-6 Years

May 25,2025 Author: Thomas

Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated project, Physint, a spiritual successor to his iconic Metal Gear series, is slated for release in another five to six years. This revelation comes directly from Kojima, who shared his timeline with Le Film Francais. The project marks his return to the "action espionage" genre since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.

Since founding his independent studio, Kojima Productions, Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop new games. He mentioned, as translated by ResetEra user Red Kong XIX, that besides Death Stranding 2, Physint is also in the works, which will consume the next half-decade of his career. Looking ahead, Kojima expressed a desire to direct a film, seeing it as a homage to the medium that shaped him. "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!" he added.

Physint was first announced by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in January 2024. Initially, Kojima hinted that it would also function as a movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that Physint represents a new level of "Digital Entertainment," blending elements typically found in films, such as look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound.

Kojima Productions is juggling multiple projects, including Death Stranding 2 and OD, a new IP in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, A24 is working on a film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on June 26, and its star, Norman Reedus, recently confirmed to IGN that he would reprise his role in the upcoming film adaptation. In other news, Kojima revealed a trove of discarded game ideas, including a concept for a "Forgetting Game" where the protagonist loses memories and abilities if players pause for too long. He also disclosed that he left behind a USB stick with game ideas for his team to explore after his passing.
