Rocksteady Suffers Further Layoffs Following Suicide Squad's Underperformance
Rocksteady Studios, renowned for the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, has experienced another wave of layoffs, adding to the turmoil following the disappointing performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game's mixed reception and underwhelming sales have had a significant impact on the studio.
The initial blow came in September, with approximately half of Rocksteady's QA team losing their jobs. This latest round of cuts, reported by Eurogamer, extends to the programming and art departments, occurring just before the release of the game's final update. Several affected employees, speaking anonymously, confirmed their dismissals. Warner Bros. has yet to publicly acknowledge these recent layoffs, mirroring their silence on the September cuts.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's financial underperformance, reported by Warner Bros. in February, significantly contributed to these staffing reductions. The game's development and post-launch support proved costly, falling short of sales projections.
This isn't an isolated incident within WB Games. WB Games Montreal, the studio behind Gotham Knights, also announced layoffs in December, impacting their QA team, many of whom reportedly supported Suicide Squad's post-launch content. The final DLC, adding Deathstroke as a playable character, launched on December 10th. Rocksteady's future plans remain unclear following the release of the game's last update, scheduled for later this month.
The underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League casts a shadow over Rocksteady's impressive track record, highlighting the risks associated with live-service games and the potential consequences of unmet sales expectations.
