在他的 YouTube 视频系列中，樱井政博解释说，《任天堂明星大乱斗》的名字来源于游戏系列的本质——“朋友们解决一些小争端”。据樱井政博说，已故的前任任天堂社长岩田聪也参与了《任天堂明星大乱斗》名称的确定。
“岩田先生也参与了‘任天堂明星大乱斗’这个名字的构思。我们团队成员提出了很多可能的名称和词语，”樱井政博在视频中详细说明道。然后，他们与《地球冒险》系列的创造者糸井重里先生举行了一次会议，以最终确定该系列的标题。樱井政博补充道：“岩田先生是选择‘兄弟’这个词的人。他的理由是，即使这些角色根本就不是兄弟，使用这个词也增添了一种细微差别，那就是他们不仅仅是在战斗——他们是朋友，正在解决一些小争端！”
除了《任天堂明星大乱斗》的来历外，樱井政博还分享了他第一次遇到岩田聪以及对这位前任任天堂社长的其他美好回忆。据樱井政博说，岩田聪亲自帮助编写了《任天堂明星大乱斗》原型的代码，当时这款游戏被称为任天堂64上的《龙王：格斗游戏》。
