Many fans are curious about GTA Online's fate following the release of GTA 6. While Rockstar Games hasn't offered a definitive answer, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick provided encouraging news during a February 14, 2025, interview with IGN.
While declining to comment on specific projects before official announcements, Zelnick used a compelling analogy: "Generally speaking, we support our properties when consumers are actively engaged."
He cited the continued success of NBA 2K Online in China as an example. Despite launching a sequel in 2017, the original remains active due to its substantial player base. Zelnick emphasized Take-Two's willingness to support legacy titles with thriving communities. This suggests GTA Online's future hinges on continued player engagement, even after GTA 6's launch. Given its decade-long success and substantial revenue generation, abandoning GTA Online would be a surprising move.
A Roblox/Fortnite-Style Platform for GTA 6's Online Mode?
Adding to the excitement, a February 17, 2025, Digiday report suggests Rockstar is developing a similar online experience for GTA 6, but with a key difference: user-generated content (UGC). This would transform GTA 6's online mode into a platform akin to Roblox or Fortnite.
Digiday's report indicates Rockstar has been in talks with prominent Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, to explore the potential of custom experiences within GTA 6. This involves players modifying game assets, environments, and even adding their own creations, fostering a unique visual sandbox.
Beyond expanding GTA 6's reach through content creators and modders, this approach presents significant monetization opportunities through virtual item sales and revenue-sharing programs. While Rockstar hasn't yet responded to Digiday's inquiries, the potential is undeniable.
Even after 14 years, GTA 5 and GTA Online remain incredibly popular, ranking as the third most-watched game on Twitch. Integrating user-generated content promises to generate substantial buzz and further extend the game's lifespan across various platforms.
