Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics ($49.99)

For 90s fans of Marvel, Capcom, and fighting games, Capcom's Marvel-based fighting games were a dream. Beginning with the excellent X-Men: Children of the Atom, the series consistently improved, expanding to the wider Marvel universe with Marvel Super Heroes, then the groundbreaking Marvel/Street Fighter crossovers, culminating in the iconic Marvel vs. Capcom and the spectacular Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics encompasses this era, bonus points for including Capcom's superb Punisher beat 'em up. A truly fantastic collection of classic titles.

This compilation shares many features with the Capcom Fighting Collection, including, unfortunately, the single shared save state across all seven games. This is particularly frustrating with the inclusion of a beat 'em up, which demands independent save functionality. However, the collection otherwise delivers as expected: extensive visual filters and gameplay options, a wealth of bonus content (art and a music player), and rollback online multiplayer. A notable addition is NAOMI hardware emulation, expertly implemented, resulting in a superb Marvel vs. Capcom 2 experience.

While not a criticism, I wish some home console versions were included. The PlayStation EX versions of the tag-team games offer unique differences, and the Dreamcast version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 boasts enjoyable extras ideal for solo play. Including Capcom's two Super NES Marvel titles, despite their imperfections, would have been a welcome addition. However, the title accurately reflects its content: Arcade Classics.

Marvel and fighting game enthusiasts will rejoice. The games are exceptional, meticulously preserved, and complemented by a comprehensive suite of extras and options. The single shared save state is a significant drawback, but otherwise, this collection is exceptional. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is a must-have compilation from Capcom, particularly enjoyable on the Switch.

Yars Rising ($29.99)

Initially skeptical, given my fondness for Yars' Revenge and the unconventional Metroidvania approach featuring a young hacker named Yar, I approached Yars Rising with caution. However, WayForward delivers a solid title. The visuals and audio are impressive, gameplay is smooth, and level design is adequate. As is typical of WayForward, boss battles are somewhat protracted, but not critically so.

WayForward admirably attempts to bridge the gap between the original single-screen shooter and this new iteration. Yars' Revenge-style sequences appear frequently, abilities echo the original, and the lore is surprisingly well-integrated. While the connection feels tenuous, Atari's attempts to revitalize its classic library are understandable. The game, however, seems to cater to two largely disparate audiences, which might have been better served by a wholly original concept.

Despite conceptual questions, Yars Rising is enjoyable. It may not redefine the genre, but it offers a satisfying Metroidvania experience for a weekend playthrough. Perhaps future installments will better integrate the original concept.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland ($24.99)

While my nostalgia for Rugrats is limited, I approached Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland with open curiosity. The game's crisp visuals immediately impressed, surpassing my memories of the show. Initial concerns about control placement were alleviated by adjustable options. The inclusion of the Rugrats theme song and Reptar coins added a familiar touch. The core gameplay is a straightforward platformer with exploration elements.

My initial impressions changed upon switching characters. Chuckie's high, challenging jump, Phil's low jump, and Lil's floating ability revealed a surprising homage to Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). The ability to pick up and throw enemies and stack blocks to reach higher areas further solidified this connection. The game features non-linear levels with verticality, sand-digging sections (Phil's specialty), and engaging boss battles. The option to switch between modern and 8-bit visuals and soundtracks adds replay value.

While other platformer influences are present, the core gameplay is a creative and fun take on a classic. The Rugrats license is well-integrated, although voice acting in cutscenes would have been a welcome addition. The game's brevity is a minor drawback, but overall, it's a surprisingly enjoyable experience. Multiplayer functionality is a plus.

Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland is a superior game than anticipated, offering a quality platformer reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 2 with unique additions. The Rugrats theme is well-integrated, though voice acting would have enhanced the experience. Despite its short length, it's a worthwhile play for platformer and Rugrats fans alike.
