Palworld Modders Restore Mechanics After Nintendo and Pokémon's Patent Lawsuit Forces Patch

In the wake of Palworld's explosive launch on Steam and Game Pass for Xbox and PC in early 2024, the game has not only broken sales records but also drawn significant legal scrutiny. Priced at $30, Palworld quickly became a sensation, leading to unprecedented concurrent player numbers. The game's success prompted Pocketpair, its developer, to expand its reach by signing a deal with Sony to create Palworld Entertainment, which later facilitated the game's release on the PS5. Amidst this success, Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, admitted the studio was overwhelmed by the massive profits generated by the game.

However, the joy was short-lived as comparisons between Palworld's Pals and Pokémon led to a patent lawsuit from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. Rather than a copyright infringement lawsuit, the companies opted for a patent route, seeking 5 million yen each, plus damages and an injunction to block Palworld's release. The lawsuit centers around three Japan-based patents related to capturing Pokémon in a virtual field, which Palworld mirrored with its Pal Sphere mechanic, similar to that seen in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In November, Pocketpair confirmed that recent patches, including Patch v0.3.11 released in November 2024, were direct responses to these legal threats. This patch notably altered the summoning of Pals, changing it from a dynamic throw to a static summon next to the player. Further changes were made in Patch v0.5.5, where gliding was modified to require a glider rather than Pals, although Pals still offer passive gliding buffs. Pocketpair described these alterations as "compromises" made to avoid an injunction that could jeopardize the game's development and sales.

Reacting swiftly, modders have stepped in to restore some of the original mechanics. Primarinabee’s Glider Restoration mod, available on Nexus Mods, has reversed the changes from Patch v0.5.5, allowing players to glide with their Pals again. Released on May 10, this mod has been downloaded hundreds of times. Another mod attempts to bring back the throw-to-release mechanic for Pals, though it lacks the original ball-throwing animation. The longevity of these mods remains uncertain given the ongoing lawsuit.

During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March, IGN had an in-depth discussion with John “Bucky” Buckley, Pocketpair's communications director and publishing manager. Buckley, who spoke at the conference about Palworld's challenges, including accusations of using generative AI and copying Pokémon models (both debunked), also touched on the unexpected nature of Nintendo's patent lawsuit, describing it as a "shock" to the studio.
