Dataminers delving into the code of Marvel Rivals have stumbled upon lists of potential future characters, sparking speculation and rumors within the gaming community. Some of these names were quickly confirmed when the Fantastic Four were officially announced, but as more names surfaced, a theory emerged that some might be deliberate decoys planted by the developers to mislead dataminers.
The community remains divided on the authenticity of these datamined characters. To address these speculations, we directly asked Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu and Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo if they were engaging in any form of trolling. Both firmly denied any such intentions, emphasizing their focus on developing the game rather than misleading the community.
Wu clarified, "So firstly, we want to say that we don't recommend anybody to make adjustments to the files [of the game]. Also, you can see that for each character's design, we go through a very complicated process involving a lot of concepts, trials, prototypes, development, and more. So there could be some information left in the code, and it might mean that we have tried those directions, and they may or may not appear in our future plans. Whether or not they will appear in our future pipeline highly depends on the gameplay experience our players would expect in our game."
Koo added, "If I could have a ten-year plan, it'd be great. But the team experimented with a lot of play styles and heroes. It's like someone doing scratch paperwork and then just leaving a notebook there, and someone [a dataminer] decided to open it with no context."
When pressed further on whether they were deliberately trolling, Koo reiterated, "No. We would rather spend our time developing the actual game."
In the same conversation, Wu and Koo explained the process of selecting characters for Marvel Rivals. The team plans updates approximately a year in advance, aiming to introduce new characters every month and a half. NetEase first assesses the type of character and skillset needed to balance and diversify the game's roster. They compile a list of potential additions, focusing on adding new characters and experiences to keep the game fresh, fill gaps, support weaker characters with new team abilities, or counter overly strong characters.
Once they have a list of possibilities, NetEase collaborates with Marvel Games to develop initial designs. They also consider current community excitement and upcoming Marvel projects, such as films or comic arcs, to finalize their choices. This process explains the presence of various hero names in the game's code, as NetEase continuously explores numerous ideas.
Marvel Rivals has been well-received since its launch, and the addition of new characters like Human Torch and The Thing, set to join on February 21, continues to enhance the game's appeal. Additionally, Wu and Koo discussed the potential for a Nintendo Switch 2 release, which you can read more about here.
