Jar of Sparks, NetEase's Studio, Pauses Development on First Game
Jerry Hook, former design lead for Halo Infinite, announced that his studio, Jar of Sparks, a NetEase subsidiary, has temporarily halted development on its debut project. Hook, who left 343 Industries and Microsoft in 2022 to found Jar of Sparks, described the initial project as a "next-generation narrative-driven action game." The studio is now actively seeking a new publishing partner to help realize its creative vision.
NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles such as Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's success, including the recent announcement of its Season 1 Battle Pass and upcoming Fantastic Four content, highlights NetEase's commitment to its live-service portfolio.
Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause, emphasizing the studio's bold approach and innovative goals. While layoffs weren't explicitly stated, Hook indicated that team members would be exploring new opportunities, and a subsequent post confirmed efforts to place all team members in new roles as the first project concludes. This situation mirrors the experience of other prominent developers who've partnered with NetEase, such as Hiroyuki Kobayashi, former Resident Evil producer, who established GPTRACK50 Studios in 2022.
The news comes amidst a period of transition for the Halo franchise, marked by challenges with Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the reception of the Paramount+ series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine for future titles suggest a potential resurgence for the franchise. While Jar of Sparks' project is temporarily on hold, the future remains uncertain, but the team's innovative spirit and the potential for a new publishing partner offer a glimmer of hope.
