Bethesda Game Studios has recently provided clarity on why Virtuos' newly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is classified as a remaster rather than a remake. In a detailed post on X/Twitter, the studio behind the iconic fantasy RPG series explained its reasoning and expressed gratitude to both new players and those revisiting the game. Bethesda emphasized that their intention was never to remake the game but to remaster it, preserving the original experience while enhancing it with modern technology.
"We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today's technology," Bethesda stated. This clarification comes as fans get their first official look and hands-on experience with Oblivion Remastered, which is now available. The remaster introduces significant visual upgrades and some core gameplay modifications, such as the ability to sprint and a revamped level-up system that blends elements from both the original Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.
Despite the extensive changes, which some players might perceive as more akin to a remake, Bethesda insists on the term "remaster." They began working on this project in 2021 and have meticulously upgraded every aspect of the game without altering its core essence. "We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it," Bethesda added. "But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one."
The studio hopes that both longtime fans and newcomers will enjoy stepping out of the Imperial sewer and into the world of Cyrodiil, feeling as though they are experiencing it anew. Bethesda expressed deep appreciation for the ongoing support from their community and aims for the remaster to provide a fresh yet familiar experience.
