Wizards of the Coast has recently issued a DMCA takedown notice targeting a fan-created mod for Stardew Valley titled "Baldur's Village." This mod, which integrates characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the beloved farming simulation game, had initially garnered positive attention, including praise from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who lauded the mod's creativity and the love poured into it.
However, the mod was removed following the DMCA notice from Wizards of the Coast, who owns the rights to both Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate. A spokesperson from Nexus Mods expressed hope that this move by Wizards of the Coast might be an oversight, as the company often relies on external agencies to monitor and address IP violations. They are optimistic that the decision might be reversed, allowing "Baldur's Village" to return.
In response to the takedown, Sven Vincke took to Twitter to voice his continued support for the mod. He highlighted the complexities of IP protection but emphasized the value of fan-created content, stating, "Free quality fan mods highlighting your characters in other game genres are proof your work resonates and a unique form of word of mouth." He argued that such mods should not be treated as commercial infringements and expressed hope for a resolution that respects the creative efforts of fans.
The timing of this takedown notice could be linked to broader plans Wizards of the Coast has for the Baldur's Gate IP. During the recent Game Developers Conference, it was hinted that more announcements regarding the franchise would be forthcoming. It's unclear whether the Stardew Valley mod conflicted with these plans or if the takedown was an error that will be corrected soon. Wizards of the Coast has been contacted for further comment on the situation.
