Tencent becomes major stakeholder in Wuthering Waves’ creator Kuro Games

  • Tencent now owns 51% stake in Kuro Games
  • Internal structure to remain same as other studios under Tencent
  • Good news as Wuthering Waves is set to release a major update next month

Tencent continues to solidify its presence in the gaming world, this time by acquiring a 51% controlling stake in Kuro Games, the studio behind Wuthering Waves. Known for its action-packed combat and immersive narrative, the RPG has captivated millions of fans and will continue to do so in future updates, with a new majority stakeholder at the helm of it all.

We already heard rumours about Tencent wanting to acquire a majority stake in Kuro Games back in March, but nothing was confirmed until now. The deal sees Tencent purchasing 37% share from Hero Entertainment, making it the sole external shareholder of Kuro Games.

While Tencent’s majority stake shifts the company’s structure, Kuro Games has assured employees that it will continue to maintain independent operations in an internal memo.  This approach is similar to Tencent's relationship with other studios like Riot Games and Supercell, where creative control largely stays with the developers themselves.

This move by the Chinese media house isn’t surprising by any means given all the studios they already have their hands. Tencent is no stranger to major investments, holding stakes in Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, and FromSoftware, among others. With Kuro games, and by extension Wuthering Waves, the studio’s holding in the adventure RPG space gets a significant boost.

Speaking of Wuthering Waves, the adventure RPG has been on a roll with its updates. The ongoing version 1.4 update has introduced the new Somnoire: Illusive Realms mode alongside two new characters. With that, there are a few weapons and upgrades up for grabs too. You can redeem these Wuthering Waves codes to get yourself some freebies as well!

Looking ahead, Kuro Games also announced that the upcoming version 2.0 update in Wuthering Waves is set to introduce Rinascita, a brand new nation for exploration, accompanied by new characters like Carlotta and Roccia. In addition, the RPG will also finally make its debut on the PlayStation 5, making it available on all major platforms.

With all the added resources from Tencent, Kuro Games has managed to bolster its long-term stability, which should help Wuthering Waves and whatever is next.
