Nintendo Halts Regular Splatoon 3 Updates

Splatoon 4 on the Horizon? End of an Era Sparks Sequel Rumors

Nintendo's announcement that regular content updates for Splatoon 3 are ending has ignited speculation about a potential sequel. While the game isn't completely abandoned – holiday events and essential updates will continue – the news has fueled rumors of Splatoon 4.

Nintendo confirmed that seasonal events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will return. Monthly challenges and balance patches will also be released as needed. The official Twitter (X) announcement stated: "After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close. Don't worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being."

This announcement follows the September 16th conclusion of Splatoon 3's Grand Festival, commemorated with a video showcasing past Splatfests. Nintendo's closing message, "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us, it's been a blast!" hints at a potential shift in focus.

Launched two years ago on September 9th, Splatoon 3's winding down has reignited whispers of a sequel. Fans have pointed to possible easter eggs within the Grand Festival event, suggesting potential locations for a new Splatoon game. One fan commented on a metropolis-like location, speculating, "Doesn't look like Inkopolis. Perhaps the setting of Splatoon 4?" However, others remain unconvinced, with some suggesting the location is simply a re-used asset from Splatoon 3.

While no official announcement regarding Splatoon 4 exists, rumors have persisted for months. Reports suggest Nintendo has begun development on a new Splatoon title for the Switch. The Grand Festival, being the final major Splatfest, further strengthens fan belief that Splatoon 4 is imminent.

Past Splatoon Final Fests have influenced subsequent sequels, leading fans to speculate a "Past, Present, or Future" theme for Splatoon 4 based on Splatoon 3's final event. Until Nintendo makes an official announcement, however, the wait for a new Splatoon game continues.
