Rare GameCube Prototype "Space World" Listed for $100K

Oct 19,2025 Author: Sarah

The Nintendo GameCube approaches its 25th anniversary, yet dedicated collectors continue pursuing the console's rarest editions. Standout variants include the Panasonic Q—boasting DVD playback capabilities absent in standard models—and numerous special editions like the Mobile Suit Gundam Char Red version.

Perhaps the ultimate holy grail is the 'Space World' GameCube prototype showcased at Nintendo's Space World 2000 convention. Long believed lost, one LED-equipped demo unit reemerged in 2023 through ConsoleVariations' founder Donny Fillerup.

A Prototype Unlike Any Retail Model

The Space World GameCube differs fundamentally from production units. Most strikingly, it contains no functional hardware—just lighting effects simulating operation. Visual distinctions include:

  • A semi-transparent lower section of the black logo reveals inserted discs
  • Modified ventilation design
  • Over 20 documented differences from Japanese retail models

Six-Figure Price Tag for Gaming History

ConsoleVariations' Donny Fillerup has listed this museum-worthy prototype on eBay for $100,000—the proceeds earmarked to establish an interactive gaming space "where visitors can feel young again." Notably, the sale excludes its equally rare matching controller.

This follows Fillerup's 2022 auction of a Golden Wii—originally gifted to the British Royal Family by THQ—which fetched $36,000. Given this track record and the prototype's unique historical status, collectors may consider the premium justified.

While the asking price reaches $100,000, Fillerup indicates openness to negotiations. For deep-pocketed enthusiasts, this represents an unprecedented opportunity to own a pivotal artifact from Nintendo's hardware development.
