Bethesda has officially announced that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include official mod support. However, this hasn't deterred the passionate fanbase, as dedicated enthusiasts have already begun releasing a series of unofficial mods.
Mere hours after Bethesda and Virtuos surprise-released the remastered version for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a selection of community mods surfaced on the popular platform, Nexus Mods. While these mods primarily offer minor customization options, they underscore the unwavering dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community.
At the time of writing, an impressive 22 mods are available on Nexus Mods. The first mod to be released allows PC users to customize their desktop by swapping the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut with one of two images featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Several mods also enable players to bypass the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Others, such as a mod that adjusts the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that eliminates the in-game compass, are already providing options to tweak gameplay.
This early surge of mods comes despite Bethesda's usual encouragement of mod support in their games. The company explicitly stated that Oblivion Remastered would not feature official mod support, a detail confirmed in the FAQ section on their website.
Notably, Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming released their Iron Longsword damage mod to demonstrate that modding is still feasible with Oblivion Remastered. In the mod's description, they stated, "This is just to prove modding is possible. Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept."
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered hit the shelves today, 19 years following the original release, available on PC and various consoles. As more players dive into the game in the coming weeks and months, the modding community is expected to grow, offering even more innovative ways to personalize the gaming experience. While we anticipate further mod releases, you can explore discussions on whether today's launch feels more like a remake than a remaster, and why Bethesda chose to label it as "Remastered."
