Professor Layton is back! A new adventure is on the horizon, and it's all thanks to a little nudge from Nintendo. Discover the story behind the long-awaited sequel.
After a nearly decade-long absence, Professor Layton returns. LEVEL-5, the game's developer, credits Nintendo for making this happen. At Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino revealed that while the team considered Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy a satisfying conclusion, Nintendo ("Company ‘N’") encouraged them to revisit the world of Professor Layton.
Hino stated (via AUTOMATON) that the series had concluded, but significant industry figures, particularly from "Company ‘N’," strongly advocated for a new game. This support was instrumental in the creation of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.
This involvement is unsurprising, considering Nintendo's close relationship with the franchise, which flourished on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. Nintendo published numerous Professor Layton titles and recognizes the series as a key success of the DS.
Hino explained that this encouragement led him to believe a new game would allow fans to experience the series at the quality level afforded by modern consoles.
Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam reunites Professor Layton and Luke Triton in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. Their new adventure involves a perplexing mystery surrounding Gunman King Joe, a legendary gunslinger.
The game retains its trademark challenging puzzles, this time enhanced through a collaboration with QuizKnock, renowned puzzle creators. This partnership is highly anticipated by fans, especially following the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which deviated from the core series formula.
