Deck Design and Storytelling:
Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt explains the design process: "Final Fantasy's rich lore and beloved characters made each game a perfect theme for a Commander deck. We delved deep into each game's story, capturing iconic moments."
The choice of games involved balancing gameplay and story recognition. While FFVII and FFXIV were easy choices, FFVI and FFX required more deliberation but ultimately won out due to team favorites. The team's passion for Final Fantasy is evident throughout the development process.
The FFVII deck blends the original game's narrative with the modern aesthetics of the Remake trilogy. Principal Narrative Game Designer Dillon Deveney states: "We captured the original story, enhancing it with Remake's visual style."
FFVI presented unique challenges due to its pixel art style. The team collaborated with the FFVI team to modernize the character designs, drawing inspiration from Yoshitaka Amano's concept art, sprites, and Pixel Remaster portraits.
Commander Choices and Deck Strategies:
Choosing the right Commander for each deck was crucial. While Cloud was a natural fit for FFVII, other choices involved careful consideration. The FFVI deck focuses on rebuilding your party from the graveyard, reflecting the game's latter half. FFVII's deck utilizes a white-red strategy, enhanced by green to incorporate "power matters" cards and elements referencing the Planet and lifestream. FFX's deck uses a white-blue-green strategy inspired by the Sphere Grid system. FFXIV's deck, with its white-blue-black color identity, emphasizes noncreature spellcasting.
Each deck includes many beloved characters beyond the Commander. Holt assures fans: "While specifics are under wraps, fans will see many favorite characters as legendary creatures and in spells."
Availability and Collector's Editions:
The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th. Each Commander deck will be available in a regular edition ($69.99 MSRP) and a Collector's Edition ($149.99 MSRP), featuring Surge foil treatment for all 100 cards. All sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will have their moment in the spotlight across the entire product line.
