The Blood of Dawnwalker debuted its much-anticipated reveal trailer, showcasing a blend of pre-rendered footage and brief gameplay snippets. The promotional video emphasizes the game's similarities to The Witcher, while also highlighting unique Persona-like elements.
Developed by Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio formed by ex-CD Projekt Red developers who contributed to The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, The Blood of Dawnwalker was initially announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024. Described as a narrative-driven open-world RPG set in a dark fantasy world, the game promises meaningful choices and a deep storyline.
On January 13, exactly a year after its initial announcement, Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco hosted a reveal stream. The event concluded with an over four-and-a-half-minute cinematic trailer that set the stage for the game's world and introduced the Dawnwalkers—vampires with enhanced abilities. The trailer also unveiled the protagonist, Coen, who becomes a Dawnwalker early in the game.
The game's dark fantasy setting, presence of monsters, and focus on morally gray choices in an open-world RPG framework strongly evoke The Witcher. The tagline "the world needs what it fears" further reinforces this connection. Fans of The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine expansion, with its vampires and challenging decisions, will find The Blood of Dawnwalker intriguing. The game includes a morality system, allowing players to decide whether Coen should embrace his Dawnwalker nature to save his family or hold onto his humanity.
While The Blood of Dawnwalker shares surface similarities with The Witcher, it introduces innovative mechanics inspired by Persona. Notably, it incorporates time management elements, where every quest consumes time. "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time," explained Rebel Wolves co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. This design encourages replayability, as players cannot complete all quests and story arcs in one playthrough, fostering a unique experience each time. Rebel Wolves calls this a "narrative sandbox."
The Blood of Dawnwalker is currently in development for PC and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Envisioned as the first installment in a trilogy and published by Bandai Namco, the game has no set release date, with an earliest potential launch in 2027 due to its start in 2022 and AAA budget. Rebel Wolves plans to reveal more gameplay details in the summer of 2025.
