Sega's Bold Gamble: RGG Studio Unveils Two New Projects, Showcasing Sega's Risk-Taking Approach

Project Century and Virtua Fighter Project Shows Sega's Willingness to Take Risks

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) credits Sega's willingness to embrace risk as the driving force behind its ability to juggle multiple large-scale projects simultaneously. This includes a brand-new IP and, surprisingly, two more titles alongside the upcoming Like a Dragon and Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025. RGG Studio's head and director, Masayoshi Yokoyama, highlights Sega's unique approach to development.

Sega's Embrace of Innovation and New IPs

RGG Studio recently unveiled two ambitious projects: Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan (revealed at The Game Awards 2025), and a fresh Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster). The scale of these projects underscores the studio's ambition, and Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities is evident. This reflects a blend of trust and a proactive pursuit of innovation.

Yokoyama, in an interview with Famitsu (translated by Automaton Media), emphasized Sega's acceptance of potential failure: "I think a good aspect of Sega is that it accepts the possibility of failure. It doesn’t just keep pursuing the kind of projects it knows are a safe bet," he stated. This risk-taking philosophy, he suggests, is ingrained in Sega's DNA, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example – born from the question, "What if we made ‘VF’ into an RPG?"

RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly for the Virtua Fighter series. Original Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support for the new project, and Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, stresses their commitment to delivering a high-quality experience.

Yamada added, "With the new ‘VF,’ we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find ‘cool and interesting!’ Whether you're a fan of the series or not, we hope you'll look forward to more information. Stay tuned!" Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement for both upcoming titles.
