"How to Secure Windows in Project Zomboid"

Mar 26,2025 Author: Zoe

In the gripping world of Project Zomboid, securing a safehouse against the relentless tide of zombies is crucial for survival. One of the most fundamental yet effective methods to fortify your base is by barricading windows. This simple technique can significantly enhance your safety and that of your co-op partners, and here's how you can do it effectively.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid - Barricading Windows

To start barricading your windows, you'll need to gather the necessary materials: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Ensure these items are in your inventory before you begin. Once you have everything ready, simply right-click on the window you wish to secure. Your character will then proceed to hammer the plank onto the window frame. You can reinforce each window up to four times, increasing its resilience against zombie intrusions.

Finding the materials can be straightforward if you know where to look. Hammers and nails are typically found in toolboxes, garages, tool sheds, closets, and other places where hardware is commonly stored. Wooden planks, on the other hand, are most abundant at construction sites. In a pinch, you can also dismantle wooden furniture like shelves and chairs to obtain planks without venturing out. If you're playing as an admin, you can use the /additem command to spawn these items directly into your inventory.

Project Zomboid - Barricaded Window

Barricaded windows are much more resistant to zombie attacks than their unbarricaded counterparts. The more planks you add, the longer it will take for zombies to break through. If you need to remove the planks later, right-click on the boards and choose the Remove option. You'll need a claw hammer or a crowbar to do this effectively.

It's worth noting that placing large furniture items like bookshelves or refrigerators in front of windows won't help in blocking zombie access, as both you and the zombies can phase through them. However, knowing how to move furniture in Project Zomboid can still be useful for interior redecoration.

For those looking to step up their base defense, consider using metal bars or metal sheets for stronger barricades. This requires a sufficient level of Metalworking skill, but it can provide an even higher level of security against the undead.
