NieR: Automata - Death Penalty Explained

NieR: Automata's Permadeath Mechanics: Understanding and Recovering from Death

NieR: Automata, despite its appearance, incorporates unforgiving rogue-like elements. Death can result in significant setbacks, particularly in the late game, due to the potential loss of valuable, time-consuming-to-acquire and upgrade items. However, complete loss isn't immediate; a recovery window exists. Let's explore the death penalty and body recovery process.

Death Penalty Explained

Death in NieR: Automata results in the loss of all experience points (XP) earned since your last save. More critically, all currently equipped Plug-In Chips are lost. While Plug-In Chips are replaceable, rarer chips and those with significant investment represent a substantial loss. Respawning leaves your equipped Plug-In Chip slots empty, requiring re-equipping or selecting a saved preset.

The lost Plug-In Chips aren't permanently gone. You have one chance to retrieve them. Failing to recover your body before another death results in the permanent loss of those chips.

Recovering Your Body

After death, your primary objective is recovering your body. A blue body icon appears on the map, pinpointing its location. Interacting with it restores your Plug-In Chips. You then face a crucial choice:

Repair: This option doesn't restore lost XP, but your former body becomes an AI companion until its destruction.

Retrieve: This option restores the lost XP earned since your last save.

Regardless of your choice, your previously equipped Plug-In Chips are restored to their previous configuration, overriding your current setup. Alternatively, you can choose to simply add the recovered chips to your inventory.
