Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Revealed for Nintendo Switch 2

It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no exception, though it comes in a form we weren't expecting. During today's Nintendo Direct, we learned that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors game: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Excitingly, it's set to launch this winter.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the latest addition to the Hyrule Warriors series, featuring characters from the ancient history sections of Tears of the Kingdom. This includes Zelda, Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone holders. The game narrates Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she allies with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding magic, Rauru with his impressive sword-spear, and a brief look at other Sacred Stone wielders.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly notable for its storytelling, which, while connected to Breath of the Wild, took a slightly unexpected turn. It will be fascinating to see if Age of Imprisonment follows suit with its narrative twists. We awarded Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
