Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, intervened in a dispute on the game's subreddit regarding AI-generated art. A former moderator, DrTankHead (also a moderator of a NSFW Balatro subreddit), had previously stated that AI art would be permitted on both subreddits, provided it was properly attributed and tagged. This statement, however, contradicted Localthunk and publisher Playstack's stance.
Localthunk swiftly responded on Bluesky, clarifying that neither they nor Playstack endorsed AI-generated imagery. A subsequent statement on the main Balatro subreddit confirmed DrTankHead's removal from the moderation team and a policy change prohibiting AI-generated images. Localthunk stated their belief that AI art harms artists and that the former moderator's actions did not reflect their views or those of Playstack. The subreddit's rules and FAQ will be updated to reflect this new policy.
Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the subreddit's previous rules regarding AI content lacked clarity, suggesting that a rule against "unlabeled AI content" may have been misinterpreted. The remaining moderators are working to clarify the rules.
DrTankHead, in a post on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, confirmed their removal and stated that while they didn't intend to make the subreddit AI-centric, they were considering a schedule where non-NSFW AI-generated art could be posted on specific days. One user responded with a suggestion for a temporary Reddit break.
The debate around generative AI is intensifying within the gaming industry, particularly given recent layoffs and ethical concerns. Keywords Studios' failed experiment in creating an entirely AI-driven game highlighted AI's limitations in replacing human talent. Despite this, major players like EA (calling AI "the very core" of its business) and Capcom (experimenting with AI for environment creation) are heavily investing in AI technology. Activision recently admitted to using generative AI for some assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, following criticism of an AI-generated loading screen image.
