CD Projekt, the developer behind the acclaimed Witcher series, has officially announced that The Witcher 4 will not be hitting the shelves in 2026. Dive deeper into the latest updates and the ongoing development of this highly anticipated game.
Enthusiasts of The Witcher series will need to temper their excitement a bit longer as CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 won't be released within the next two years. During the studio's fiscal year 2024 earnings presentation, it was revealed that while they aim to meet certain financial objectives through share-based incentive programs, The Witcher 4 won't contribute to these goals by the end of 2026.
In a subsequent Q&A session, when pressed for more details, CD Projekt Red's Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, reiterated that no specific launch date would be announced at this time. He noted, "We are not going to announce the precise launch date for the game yet. All we can share now to provide more visibility to investors is that the game will not be launched within the time frame of the first target for the incentive program, which ends December 31, 2026."
Despite the delay in release, fans can take heart in knowing that The Witcher 4, also known as Project Polaris, is progressing well. According to CD Projekt's Q3 financial update last year, the game has entered "full production," marking a significant milestone in its development. Nielubowicz expressed optimism about the project's advancement, stating, "Of all our projects, this one [Project Polaris/The Witcher 4] is currently the most far along, and we're starting the most intensive phase of development. I wish to thank the team for its effort and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for further progress."
The Witcher 4 was first unveiled as Project Polaris in 2022, and during The Game Awards 2024, it was officially titled The Witcher IV. The game introduces a new protagonist, shifting the spotlight from Geralt of Rivia to his adoptive daughter, Ciri, now older and ready to carve her own path in the Witcher universe.
In line with CD Projekt's announcements on X (formerly Twitter) in October 2022, The Witcher 4 is the inaugural title in a new trilogy. The subsequent games in this trilogy, tentatively titled Project Canis Majoris and Project Orion, are slated to follow within a six-year window after The Witcher 4's release.
