Since its record-breaking release last year, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has seen an incredible surge in modding activity, with the latest breakthrough being the most exciting yet. Tom, also known as Warhammer Workshop, the creative mind behind the highly acclaimed Astartes Overhaul mod, has just released a groundbreaking 12-player co-op mode for the game. The gameplay footage is nothing short of spectacular, showcasing multiple players taking down a Tyranid Trygon Prime in a battle that feels like an MMO boss encounter.
This achievement is particularly notable because the vanilla version of *Space Marine 2* only supports up to three-player co-op. Yet, with the support of developer Saber Interactive, modders have not only surpassed this limit but are also ambitiously working to enhance the game further.
Tom expressed his amazement at Saber Interactive's support for the modding community, stating to IGN, “None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do.”
It's important to mention that the current mod is still in the testing phase, though it functions impressively. The addition of 12-player co-op significantly alters the PvE balance, which is understandable given the increased number of players compared to what Saber initially designed.
With this new capability, modders are now developing additional content to maximize the potential of the 12-player co-op. Tom revealed to IGN that the team is crafting various modes, including prop hunt, PvP within operations, extensive updates for the upcoming official horde mode, and thrilling raid-style missions featuring formidable bosses and innovative mechanics.
The Space Marine 2 modding community has grown tremendously, with over 20,000 enthusiasts active in the main Discord server. Tom's enthusiasm is palpable as he credits Saber Interactive for not only enabling this modding boom but also for consistently delivering excellent content without resorting to the typical predatory battle-pass models seen in many modern games.
This 12-player mod may offer a glimpse into what fans can expect from Space Marine 3, especially given the game's success and the ongoing development of its sequel. The excitement surrounding Space Marine 2 continues to build, with the anticipated horde mode, a new class, and additional Operations maps and weapons on the horizon. Saber Interactive has recently shared details about Patch 8, confirmed some horde mode mechanics, and unveiled the setting for the new map.
Space Marine 3 is officially in development, and the announcement promised "large-scale battles that are even more spectacular," which could hint at an increased co-op player count. Until more information is available, the modding community will keep Space Marine 2 fresh and engaging, as demonstrated by this latest remarkable achievement.
