To start crafting upgraded weapons in *Atomfall*, you first need to unlock the Gunsmithing skill. This crucial survival skill is learned by reading the Crafting Manual. While finding these skill-related books can be challenging, there's a straightforward method to obtain the Crafting Manual.
Morris Wick, located at the Village Shop in Wyndham, possesses a copy of the Crafting Manual. However, acquiring it involves more than simple bartering; it requires some cunning blackmail. Upon entering St. Katherine’s Church, you'll uncover a recent murder of Maisie, with the Vicar eager to keep it under wraps. Further investigation will lead you to evidence implicating Morris in the crime.
You can find this incriminating evidence in the Brewery Cellar at coordinates 30.5 E, 80.5 N, in the west of Wyndham Village. Enter through the cellar door by the ruined building and search for the note titled "Kill the One They Call Maisie". Once you have this note, return to Morris at his Village Shop at 33.3 E, 79.9 N. Engage in dialogue that subtly pressures Morris without outright threats until you reach the "Bargaining" option. Selecting this will prompt Morris to hand over the Crafting Manual in exchange for your silence.
Alternatively, you can locate the Crafting Manual in the D Section of The Interchange, though this method is more time-consuming and challenging.

To upgrade a weapon, you'll need two units of the weapon in the previous tier, along with specific amounts of Gun Oil and Scrap, which can vary depending on the weapon.
For instance, to elevate the Falkirk Battle Rifle to Pristine (as shown above), you will need 2 Falkirk Battle Rifles (Stock), 3 Gun Oil, and 6 Scrap. You can find Gun Oil and Scrap primarily at military installations like Protocol Camps. If you're planning on frequent weapon upgrades, consider investing in the Deep Pockets survival skill to increase your capacity for carrying crafting materials.
Upgrading a weapon to Pristine for the first time will reward you with the 'Make do and mend' Achievement or Trophy.
