In the enchanting world of Stardew Valley, the Dwarf stands out as one of the more enigmatic figures. Nestled deep within the mines, this solitary being is the only representative of his kind that players encounter. The Dwarf's backstory remains shrouded in mystery, offering little in the way of concrete details even in the latest game versions. However, engaging with this character adds a delightful layer of fantasy to your journey as a farmer in Pelican Town.
Despite the challenges, building a friendship with the Dwarf is an intriguing endeavor. It requires learning the Dwarvish language, a task that sets this relationship apart from others in the game. While befriending the Dwarf won't yield the same tangible benefits as friendships with other villagers, the process itself is a rewarding aspect of Stardew Valley's immersive experience.
Updated on January 8, 2024 by Demaris Oxman: Recent updates to Stardew Valley, including the introduction of the Movie Theater in version 1.5 and significant adjustments to gift preferences in 1.6, have reshaped how players can build friendships with NPCs. For those keen on befriending the mysterious inhabitant of the mines, here's a refreshed guide to getting to know the Dwarf.
To encounter the Dwarf, head to the mines and look to the right of the entrance on the first floor. You'll spot a large boulder that you can break using a copper pickaxe or better, or by using a bomb. Once the boulder is cleared, venture a short distance to the right, and you'll find the Dwarf in his unique shop, ready to interact.
Upon your initial meeting, you'll quickly realize that the Dwarf communicates in a language foreign to humans. While you can attempt to give him gifts, these won't impact your friendship level until you can understand each other. To bridge this communication gap, you must collect all four Dwarf Scrolls, a type of artifact scattered throughout the game. Once you donate these scrolls to the Museum, Gunther will reward you with the Dwarvish Translation Guide.
With the translation guide in hand, return to the mines and speak to the Dwarf again. Now equipped to understand him, you can start forging a meaningful friendship and even purchase items from his shop.
Building trust and friendship with the Dwarf, much like with other residents of Pelican Town, hinges on the gifts you choose to give. You can present up to two gifts per week, with the Dwarf's birthday on Summer 22 offering a prime opportunity to boost your relationship, as gifts given on this day will earn 8 times the usual friendship points.
These are the Dwarf's top picks, each increasing your friendship by 80 points. Most are obtainable in the mines:
These gifts, also found mainly in the mines, will boost your friendship by 45 points:
Steer clear of these items, as they will negatively impact your friendship. Hated gifts cause a larger decrease in points than disliked ones:
With the Movie Theater operational, the Dwarf will venture out to enjoy a film if invited with a ticket. His cinematic tastes are broad, as he Loves all movie options. However, when it comes to snacks, he has specific preferences. He Loves Stardrop Sorbet and Rock Candy, and Likes Cotton Candy, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jawbreaker, Salmon Burger, Sour Slimes, and Star Cookie. Any other concession choices will not meet his approval, so choose wisely to enhance your friendship with this intriguing character.
