Kadokawa, now a Sony Group subsidiary, boldly targets 9,000 original IP publications annually by fiscal year 2027. This ambitious goal, representing a 50% increase from their 2023 output, is fueled by Sony's significant investment and acquisition of 10% of Kadokawa's shares.

Kadokawa President Takeshi Natsuno, in an interview with Nikkei, outlined the plan. This expansion includes leveraging Sony's global distribution network to broaden Kadokawa's international reach. A phased approach is anticipated, with an intermediate target of 7,000 titles by fiscal 2025.

To support this growth, Kadokawa plans to significantly expand its editorial team by 40%, aiming for approximately 1,000 staff members. This strategic increase in personnel is designed to enhance efficiency and prevent staff burnout.

This expansion will also incorporate a "media mix strategy," adapting successful IPs into anime, games, and other media. Natsuno emphasizes the goal of fostering diversity to cultivate major hits.

This collaboration benefits Sony as well, particularly Crunchyroll, its anime streaming platform with over 15 million paid subscribers. The partnership will significantly expand Crunchyroll's anime library with Kadokawa's extensive IP portfolio, including titles like Bungo Stray Dogs, Oshi no Ko, and The Rising of the Shield Hero.

Sony's interest in multimedia expansion, including live-action adaptations and international co-productions, aligns perfectly with Kadokawa's growth strategy, creating a synergistic partnership poised for significant market impact.
