Sony's Planned Acquisition of Kadokawa: Employee Enthusiasm Amidst Concerns

Sony's confirmed bid to acquire Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa has sparked mixed reactions. While analysts like Takahiro Suzuki suggest the deal benefits Sony more than Kadokawa, Kadokawa employees reportedly express optimism about the potential acquisition. The ongoing negotiations haven't yielded a final decision yet.
A Strategic Move for Sony, but at What Cost to Kadokawa?

Suzuki's analysis highlights Sony's shift towards entertainment, a sector where creating original intellectual property (IP) remains a challenge. Acquiring Kadokawa, with its vast portfolio of successful IPs (including Oshi no Ko, Dungeon Meshi, and Elden Ring), offers a strategic solution. However, this comes at the cost of Kadokawa's independence. The acquisition could lead to stricter management and increased scrutiny of projects not directly contributing to IP development.
Employee Satisfaction and the Natsuno Administration

Despite potential drawbacks, Weekly Bunshun reports a positive employee sentiment towards a Sony takeover. Many interviewed employees expressed approval, viewing Sony as a preferable alternative to the current leadership under Takeshi Natsuno.
This positive outlook stems largely from dissatisfaction with Natsuno's handling of a significant June cyberattack by the BlackSuit hacking group. The attack resulted in the theft of over 1.5 terabytes of data, including sensitive employee information. Natsuno's perceived inadequate response to the crisis has fueled employee discontent, leading to hopes that a Sony acquisition might bring about leadership changes. The employees' belief is that Sony would likely replace Natsuno, improving the company's overall management.
