PS5 Disc Drive Restocks at Select US Retailers – But Act Fast!
The PS5 disc drive is back in stock at some US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon, as of mid-January 2025. However, given past trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last long.
The ongoing scarcity is potentially linked to the release of the PS5 Pro, which doesn't offer a disc drive option. This, combined with the earlier release of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, has created significant demand for the separately sold PS5 disc drive attachment, particularly in the US, where supply has been constrained for months.
While some retailers have managed to restock, the situation remains fluid. As of January 15th, Amazon and PlayStation Direct are selling the drive for its standard $79.99 MSRP. A third-party Walmart seller was also identified, but they're charging a 50% markup ($122) and have very limited stock.

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits PS5 disc drive purchases to one per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The shortage, impacting both the US and UK (since late 2024), highlights the unexpected consequence of the PS5 Pro's design. Gamers seeking the optimal PS5 Pro experience and the ability to play physical games must purchase the disc drive separately.
With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still showing the drive as out of stock, the shortage clearly isn't resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
