The recent reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked excitement, particularly with the intriguing possibility of using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse. During the reveal trailer, we saw a moment where detached Joy-Cons were placed onto a surface with their attachment sides down, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These connectors then slid across the surface in a manner reminiscent of a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on one of the connectors, adding weight to the theory that Joy-Cons could function as a mouse.

Rumors had been circulating prior to the reveal, suggesting that the Joy-Cons might feature an internal sensor similar to those found in computer mice, allowing for this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these rumors or elaborate on what such a feature might entail. Fans are buzzing with speculation, with some believing it could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which are traditionally better suited to mouse and keyboard controls. Others are excited about the potential for innovative uses within Nintendo's first-party titles, given the company's history of creative gameplay mechanics.
While there's much we don't yet know about the potential mouse support for the Switch 2, including the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, we do have some confirmed details. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release planned for 2025. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More information about upcoming software will be shared at a Nintendo Direct in April. For comprehensive coverage on the Nintendo Switch 2, you can follow our updates here.
