NieR: Automata offers extensive free-roaming and side quests between main story missions. Much of this content might seem missable on your first playthrough. Don't worry, though! The game is far from over after the initial credits roll. Completing the game unlocks the ability to revisit earlier content and side quests within the same save file. Here's how to unlock and utilize Chapter Select to achieve this.
This article contains minor spoilers regarding the true ending.
How To Unlock Chapter Select In NieR: Automata
Unlocking Chapter Select requires completing one of the game's true endings. This involves three playthroughs, culminating in a choice during the final confrontation of the third. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider each a "chapter" due to its self-contained narrative.
After seeing the credits of a playthrough, save your game. Loading this save file begins the next section, featuring a different character. The final playthrough involves multiple character switches. Completing it unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.
How Does Chapter Select Work In NieR: Automata
Access Chapter Select from two locations:
- The main menu of your save file upon loading.
- Any access point within the game world.
This menu lets you select any chapter to load, retaining your weapons, level, and items. When loading a chapter with multiple playable characters, you can choose which character to play as.
Note: Completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the selected chapter. Save at an access point before switching chapters to preserve progress; otherwise, any gains (levels, items) from the current chapter will be lost. Chapter Select is ideal for completing all content and exploring different choices to obtain every ending.
