Entertainment Weekly also shared insights from Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, regarding Johnny Cage's role in the sequel. Boon emphasized the significance of Cage's integration into the Mortal Kombat universe, describing him as a "washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing." He praised Urban's unique take on the character, suggesting it would bring a fresh and novel perspective to the film. Boon teased a "ridiculously hilarious" introduction for Cage, while director Simon McQuoid highlighted the balance they aimed to strike with the character, ensuring he had depth beyond mere comic relief.
In addition to the new characters, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that movie-accurate skins for Urban's Johnny Cage, Rudolph's Kitana, and Ford's Shao Kahn will be available in the video game Mortal Kombat 1 later this year, bridging the gap between the film and the gaming world.
The sequel also introduces Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, with Josh Lawson and Max Huang making a surprising return as Kano and Kung Lao, respectively, despite their demise in the first film. Boon explained that the flexible lore of the Mortal Kombat series, which often involves spirits and the NetherRealm, allows for the resurrection of characters, keeping fans on their toes.
Rounding out the new cast members are Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, adding further depth to the already rich tapestry of characters. Mortal Kombat 2 is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025, promising an exhilarating continuation of the beloved franchise.
