MindLight isn't your typical spooky adventure game featuring haunted houses and shadow creatures; it's an innovative action-adventure game developed by PlayNice that aims to help children manage stress and anxiety through biofeedback. What is biofeedback? It's a mind-body therapy that can enhance both your physical and mental well-being. In MindLight, your emotions directly influence the gameplay. When you're calm, the dark mansion becomes illuminated, making it easier to navigate. However, if you're feeling anxious, the mansion remains shadowy and intimidating, reflecting your internal state.
MindLight: More Than Just a Game
MindLight was co-developed by Dr. Isabela Granic, the co-founder of PlayNice and a leading scientist who conducted several randomized control trials with over a thousand children. The trials demonstrated that kids who played MindLight experienced a significant reduction in anxiety, by at least half. The game's storyline involves you as a child exploring your grandmother's mansion, which is engulfed in shadows. By using a headset, the game monitors your brainwaves or heart rate in real-time. The light you generate helps you navigate the mansion and fend off the terrifying creatures lurking within.
Although the game was primarily tested with children aged 8 to 12, PlayNice reports that it has been enjoyed by older kids and parents alike. Thanks to its real-time adaptation to each player's stress response, the game remains a personalized and dynamic experience for everyone.
