Despite the disappointing reception of the TV adaptation of Halo, Microsoft remains undeterred in its pursuit of bringing more of its video games to life through movies and TV shows. Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, recently shared with Variety that fans can look forward to more adaptations in the future. This comes on the heels of the upcoming release of A Minecraft Movie, a cinematic adaptation of the popular Microsoft-owned game Minecraft, starring Jack Black. If successful, this movie could pave the way for sequels, further expanding Microsoft's footprint in entertainment.
Microsoft's journey in video game adaptations includes the highly successful Fallout series on Prime Video, which is already slated for a second season. However, the TV adaptation of Halo, a flagship Xbox game, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from these experiences and gaining confidence in the process. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," he stated, acknowledging that while some projects might not hit the mark, the overall trajectory is positive.
Looking ahead, speculation abounds about which Xbox game might be next in line for adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for both a live-action film and an animated series based on Gears of War, though updates have been sparse. The success of Fallout might encourage Prime Video to consider adapting other fantasy titles like The Elder Scrolls or Skyrim, though Amazon's current slate of fantasy shows might influence their decision.
Other potential adaptations from Microsoft's extensive portfolio include a Forza Horizon movie, inspired by Sony's successful Gran Turismo film. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft could explore a Call of Duty movie or revisit a Warcraft adaptation. Jason Schreier's book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, mentioned that Activision Blizzard had been developing series for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo with Netflix, projects that Microsoft might revive. On a lighter note, the family-friendly Crash Bandicoot could be ripe for an animated adaptation, following the success of similar projects like Mario and Sonic. Additionally, the upcoming reboot of Fable in 2026 could also be considered for an adaptation.
There's also the possibility of Microsoft giving Halo another chance, this time through a big-budget movie. Meanwhile, Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, have made significant strides in this space. Sony has enjoyed success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and the upcoming second season of Twisted Metal. Sony also has plans for a Helldivers 2 movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and an anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, with the God of War TV show already set for two seasons. Nintendo, on the other hand, boasts the most successful video game adaptation with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and is working on a sequel as well as a live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation.
