In MageTrain, you navigate a line of heroes that follow you like a snake, each autonomously attacking as you maneuver around the arena. Your primary task is to strategically position your heroes, deciding who leads and who supports, as their abilities vary based on their position in the 'train'. The game launches with nine unique heroes, including one who uniquely throws birds, each with distinct skills that adapt based on their role within the line.
Your journey takes you through eight diverse dungeons, where you'll face off against 28 different enemy types and can harness 30 different skills to strengthen your team. Along the way, you'll collect gold and power-ups to enhance your run. The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures each playthrough is unique, with branching paths, upgrade choices, and survival challenges akin to games like Slay the Spire or FTL. There are no fixed levels, and progress isn't saved between runs; if you crash into an obstacle or get overwhelmed by enemies, you'll need to start over.
The allure of MageTrain lies in the progression you experience with every run. Even when you don't succeed, you'll learn to better judge when to play defensively, when to launch an all-out offensive, and when to simply hold on for another crucial 30 seconds.
