FromSoftware has recently unveiled additional details about their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, highlighting how their collaboration with Nintendo has influenced both the game's style and character design. The game's trailer, showcased during the Switch 2 Direct, ended with a striking image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, sparking curiosity among fans. This character, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion in The Duskbloods.
In an interview with Nintendo, director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that this character fills a role similar to the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. "They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance," Miyazaki stated. He also noted that the design of this character reflects a playful nod to Nintendo's style, describing it as an attempt to do "something Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
Miyazaki further elaborated on the character's unique design, saying, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)." This marks a departure from FromSoftware's traditional shrine keepers, such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll, who have been pivotal in guiding players through their games.
As The Duskbloods is a PvPvE game, the specific nature of the guidance provided by the winged rat remains to be seen. Miyazaki hinted at the inclusion of "a lot of new and interesting ideas," suggesting that players should anticipate surprises when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
