Civilization VII's Early Access Launch Met with Negative Steam Reviews
Civilization VII (Civ 7) launched its Advanced Access five days before its official February 11th release, but the early reception on Steam has been overwhelmingly negative. The game currently holds a "mostly negative" rating, primarily due to criticisms focused on the user interface (UI), map features, and resource mechanics.
The UI has drawn significant flak, with many players describing it as clunky, visually unappealing, and inferior to Civ VI's interface. Some even went so far as to compare it to a free mobile game imitation. Concerns have been raised that Firaxis Games prioritized console development, resulting in a simplified, less customizable UI for the PC version.
Map generation and customization options have also been criticized. Players cite limited map sizes (small, medium, and large, compared to Civ VI's five), a lack of detailed map type information, and insufficient customization choices. The inability to easily navigate and explore map types further fueled the negative feedback.
The revised resource mechanics have also proven controversial. Instead of directly gathering resources from map tiles as in Civ VI, Civ VII assigns resources to cities and empires via strategic management. This change, according to players, diminishes the replayability compared to the previous system's random resource generation.
Firaxis Games acknowledged the negative feedback, particularly regarding the UI, promising ongoing improvements and future updates to address player concerns. They also indicated that map features are subject to change and expansion through future updates. The developer's response suggests a commitment to addressing the issues raised by the community.
